Vs. Detroit Lions (L 13-20) In the meantime, coach Mike Shanahan has lost his marbles. Last year's constant runningback shuffling of Tatum Bell and Mike Anderson has obviously confused him. Which is why he thought starting someone named Mike Bell would be a good idea. In his first game as a starter, Mike Bell looked overmatched, like a chipmunk trying to headbutt a semi-truck. He went down at first contact and fumbled, earning the Chris Howard Award of Insignificance. This week, Shanahan is looking over his roster to see if someone named "Tatum Anderson" is available. The game was broadcast locally by CBS 4, with Gary Miller and former Broncos RB Reggie Rivers on the call. The crew missed several key plays, with inappropriate timing of bullshit sideline interviews (in one, LB Al Wilson mentioned that this team has alot of "talent". Again). The key phrase/crutch used by Miller and Rivers was "he's been impressive in pratice". They'd read a player's name from the roster and freuquently affix that proclamation. On one play, cameras clearly showed Elvis Dumervil charging Detroit's Dan Orlovsky. Rivers and Miller informed us that it was Ebenezer Ekuban. CBS 4--- YOUR Broncos Station! Detroit's Kevin Jones ran liberally through the Donkey defense. Observers would note that regular starters Gerard Warren and Champ Bailey were not on the field, but a fat guy and a coverage cornerback can't make that big of a difference, can they? Larry Coyer's defense routinely makes adjustments during a typical game, so it wasn't fair to base their prognosis on two series against the Lions. Over on offense, Jay Cutler connected with WR David Kircus for a TD pass. Kircus, a former Lion, then creamed his pants in celebration over scoring a meaningless TD in a forgettable game. Cutler performed well and made several connections with fellow rookie, TE Tony Scheffler. For all intents and purposes, Scheffler looked identical to the departed Jeb Putzier, as it appears the Broncos have plugged that hole well. Another noteworthy appearance: Dwayne Carswell played in his first game since a near fatal car accident last Sepember. "House" lined up at tackle and was clearly visible with his 12 lbs. of dreadlocks. Bradlee Van Pelt finished up the game with the third and fourth team defense. Unlike last year's San Diego game, where he ran around like a rabid squirrel looking for Milk Duds, BVP tried to drop back into the pocket and...pass?! Couldn't tell, as several Lions were invited into the backfield with him. The game ended when David Kircus dropped a BVP pass in the end zone. We're big on BVP here at eStragand Sports, but it's becoming obvious that he wont be this team's franchise QB. The best he can hope for, in Denver, is a solid back-up gig and the occassional spot start. Still... he can be an effective NFL back-up quarterback. Nothing wrong with that--- and we'll always have that autographed BVP mini-helmet on display in eStragand Sports Central. When the game ended, there were no glaring sore spots or problems. Mike Bell will probably sleep with a football and Reggie Rivers will study the roster. Both teams were more concerned with getting certain players on tape, rather than strategy and winning. It's one meaningless practice game to get the rust out and make sure everyone's pads fit. It's one meaningless game recap to get the rust out and make sure my keyboard works. Things will become more eventful and exciting as the season continues. I can't say the same for my recaps. Comment about this article. Contact The Asshole Who Wrote This!
