Option 38 Stuff

Vs. Houston Texans (W 17-14)
Snif..they grow up so fast. Remember when Little Gary Kubiak was the "other QB"? He spent his weekends holding clipboards, agreeing with Dan Reeves and holding for extra points. Was that really over 20 years ago? Now our lil' Kube-ster's all growed up and got himself his own football team. Okay, so it's in Texas and it came with the words "David Carr, Quarterback"...but good for Kubiak.

Kubiak's Texans ran some familiar plays. Including the ill-fated end-around that the Broncos routinely run for 4 yards. New Texans offensive coordinator Mike Sherman even called a few plays with the wishbone formation. Who do they think they are? The Texas Longhorns? I mean... the wishbone? I thought Barry Switzer was exiled from the NFL. When you inherit a team that went 2-14, you can experiment all you want. I'm looking forward to the single-wing offense, the swinging gate and drop-kicks appearing in Houston.

The Texans were game and actually held their own with the Broncos' starters, who played into the third quarter. The Broncos seemed to focus on their running plays more frequently. In what was definitely a test, Tatum Bell burrowed in from the 1 to score a short touchdown. Last year, the Broncos routinely went to Mike Anderson for the short yardage TD, and Bell's ability to follow suit has been questioned. Mike Bell, on the other hand, did nothing of note. Cedric Cobbs had the most significant yardage, but his performance came against Houston's second and third stringers. Cobbs has shown enough to earn a roster spot, but not the starting slot just yet. Rumors are dissipating through the air like a moist fart, and have Tatum Bell being annointed as the Broncos' #1 back for the season opener.

Javon Walker made his first catches since his knee injury of a year ago. Meanwhile, the departed Ashley Lelie --who had been complaining about being a third receiver-- was in his new home of Atlanta. As a third receiver. Good luck with that, then.

Walker's passes were thrown by a somewhat erratic Jake Plummer. Plummer's passing game has typically been set up by the running game. So when the Bronco rushing game was slowed, it affected the aerial antics. Plummer made several off-target throws... but I wouldn't jump into the talkshow racket of declaring a quarterback controversy. Unless the team starts 0-3. Then you bust the warranty sticker off of Jay Cutler and throw him into the mix.

A rather discouraging game. Barely beating a 2-14 team by three points at home. Bust out the "well, good thing it's only preseason" mantra. But don't tell that to the NFL Network. In case you watched the game and missed it, the NFL Network would like to remind you that live coverage starts on Thanksgiving. That's Thanksgiving. Live coverage is starting on Thanksgiving. So starting on Thanksgiving you can watch live coverage on the NFL Netowrk. Sure to be a hit for NFL Network, since they're starting live coverage on Thanksgiving.

In related news, I'm having a Fourth of July Barbeque. In July 2008.

NFL Network also had a post-game wrap-up session, hosted by Rich Eisen. Eisen, in a display of cunning humor, satire and savvy was calling a highlight that featured Jake Plummer slipping to the ground as he droped back to pass. Eisen's remark: "Jake Plummer's fallen...but he CAN get up!" BWAHHHHH-HA-HA! That is so clever and hilarious! The guy should write movie reviews for Good Morning America with that razor wit. Maybe they can show a shot of the Broncos linemen and Eisen can say "Where's the Beef?" Wow, Hee-Haw's Roy Clark better move over, cuz' there's a new Captain Funny in town! Hint: he wears a suit and covers football!

Roser cuts have hit the newswire today, and the only surprising name is Cornell Green. An adept back-up tackle for the past few seasons, it was suprising that Green was in the first wave of cuts. P.J. Alexander was also sent packing. The recently returned Willie Middlebrooks became the recently departed Willie Middlebrooks. If they really want to, I'm sure these guys can find work with another team. Or in Canada. Or on one of the 138 Arena Football teams. Or the National Indoor Football League. Or Carl's Jr.

This week's game is on Thursday night and should be the annual Bradlee Van Pelt Bowl. However, let this be a quick reminder that this Thursday is only 13 weeks away from Live Coverage on NFL Network.
