G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (ARAH)

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #121

“Slice & Dice & Everything Nice”

Writer: Larry Hama
Penciler: Andrew Wildman

Summary:

The Joes’ heavy armor arrives at the Silent Castle, completely blowing their cover. A team of Cobras arrive to entertain the Joes with a firefight. Slice, Dice and the Red Ninjas pursue Destro and the Baroness inside the castle. Destro knew the Baroness was probably brainwashed, but still loves her and will submit himself to the Brainwave Scanner to prove it.

Notes:

  • A big part of the plot involves the faulty ignition on the Badger.
  • The Ninja Force makes a circus-like “Human ladder” to reach the castle from their mountain surveillance point.
  • A Toxo-Viper appears, but it’s the “new” version 2.0
  • On two ocassions, Slice uses his “Scorpion Cut”. No way to tell what it is, though.
  • GI Joe Dossier is of Mutt & Junkyard. It mentions that we still don’t know if Mutt & Spirit Iron-Knife are in jail because of the Millville incident in issue 103.
  • A No-Prize is given over the skeletons vs. identifiable corpses from issue 116. A fan postulates that all the skeletons were of Captain Minh and the extra Vipers, who died before the others.
  • This is the official kick-off for the 11th year of the franchise. Ten years are in the books, now. Quite an accomplishment….although this issue sucks and the cover price jumps to $1.25. First price increase in a good time. I was a high school senior at the time and, aside from buying a few figures in 1991, I was pretty far removed from the toy side of things.
