G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #265

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencils: Netho Diaz

Summary:

Below Revanche HQ in New Jersey, a droned-out Destro and “Beta-97” are dispatched below to check the security on the tunnels and sewers. They run into a GI Joe recon team of Low-light and Lightfoot. After a firefight, the Joes are able to damage Beta-97 and then escape. In the ruckus, Destro’s prosthetic hand was shot off and he discovers that he can control it, once again. Destro returns to Revanche HQ, remains coy about the hand, and uses it to remove the Baroness’s control device.

The Oktober Guard arrives in Trucial Abysmia to catch a plane to the US. Spetsnaz troops try to ambush them, but the Guard is able to dispatch them.

At Ellen Bogen’s toyshop, a birthday party is held for Throwdown. Over in Elizabeth, NJ, the Dreadnoks all convene and are privy to Cobra’s plan to capture “Snake-Eyes”.

Notes:

  • Once again, no mention of how or why the 4 deceased Oktober Guard guys are alive and well.
  • I need to check, but in the Oktober Guard stories of the past, I don’t think they ran into Snake-Eyes much. So last issue’s comment about Snakes being a honorable foe is kinda’ misguided. I know, I know… an Oktober Guard/Snake-Eyes story is probably an “untold tale” in Hama’s mind.
  • While the two skirmishes are nice, this seems like yet another “transition” issue.
  • This is supposedly the end of the “Artificial Intelligence” arc, despite no resolution to the story. I assume it will overlap with the next arc, just like “The Cobra’s Venom” did.
  • Oh, by-the-way, the next arc is “Snake Hunt”, which is billed as including “every living member of GI Joe”. Plus, some who were previously dead, I’d bet.
  • In the Dreadnok scene, we get what I believe is the first appearance of Gnawgahyde in the “ARAH/Hama-verse”. He was a 1989 character who they never got around to introducing in the comics. He did, however, appear in the DIC animated series.
