G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #327

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencils: Andrew Krahnke

Summary:

In Sierra Gordo, Cover Girl, Jinx and Dawn Moreno were disguised as nuns, but were subsequently captured by rebels and forced to dig their own graves. They’re saved by Down Range’s sniper shots as the rebels are revealed to be Revanche Blue Ninja Robots. Joined by Sherlock, the 5 fight off the robots, then proceed to their real objective: an old Meso-American pyramid that has been grown over by vegetation, and now has a Terror Drome hidden inside it.

Avoiding death traps form the pyramid as well as more “blinjas”, the Joes prepare to blow up the Terror Drome’s outer wall. However, it is actually “reactive armor” and will set off a “catastrophic plume of hot plasma that will incinerate everything in the corridors!” The Joes are then caught between the reactive armor and more advancing blinjas.

Notes

  • Maybe it’s the recent slew of one-shot issues, but this story seemed like it would follow suit. It begins already in progress, contains mostly firefights, and seemed like it would all tie up on the last page. Instead, it’s to be continued. While not a wild cliffhanger, it threw me off guard when it ended.
  • Obviously, this is continuing the Terror Drome sub-plot that has been in the past 8 issues or so.
  • It’s a little funny that it’s taken this long to come up with “blinjas”.
  • A SAW Viper seems to be commanding the Revanche/Cobra efforts from a command center. Sort of the opposite of the (now) traditional Pitt Command Center, with Duke, Mainframe and a Background Character (usually Stalker, Psyche-Out or Lady Jaye) watching and coordinating stuff.
  • One of Hama’s trademark storytelling traits pops-up again, as all the Joes announce what sort of weapons they’re carrying.
  • I think this is the first visit to Sierra Gordo since about issue 200. Maybe?
  • Down Range is sorta’ like the modern (and living) Shooter. I mention this, because the colorist seems to depict her with dark skin; which was a trait of Shooter and not Down Range.
