G.I. JoeG.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (ARAH)

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #330

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencils: Paul Pelletier

Summary:

In 3 separate locations (Darklonia, The Pit, and the High Sierras), Dr. Venom’s “Easter Egg” trigger causes Sean Collins, Dawn Moreno and Snake-Eyes to activate. The command is straightforward “kill any G. I. Joe within reach”.

In Darklonia, Helix simply tells Sean/Throwdown that the attacking Revanche androids are actually Cobra Troopers. It works, for awhile.

In the Pit, Mainframe is able to isolate Dawn on the training level, through use of lockdown blast doors.

In the High Sierras, Snake-Eyes slowly put son his gear and attacks Scarlett. With help from Trips, she fights him off and escapes into the wilderness. She’s suddenly attacked by a beat, but Snake-Eyes is seemingly able to shake off the mental trigger and save her.

Finally, over in Castle Destro, one Lara Croft arrives, looking for intel about the land-locked Arbco Star. She then announces that she needs to contact Shipwreck.

Notes:

  • The last two pages with Lara Croft/Tomb Raider were a big “wha?” for me. Mainly because I no longer follow all the advance comic book solicitations and don’t know what’s coming out, or is planned. If I did see anything about a G.I. Joe/Tomb Raider crossover, I probably assumed it would be a mini-series or special, similar to “G.I. Joe and the Six Million Dollar Man”. Did not expect it to appear in this book.
  • I’m guessing that there’s a “Lara Croft action figure” somewhere…so I’m lumping her in with “figures” under “Appearances”.
  • Sorry, but I forget: when exactly did Sean/Throwdown get zapped with Snake-Eyes’s memories? Was it during the big casino raid, when the original Snake-Eyes came back? I know that he was physically replacing Snake-Eyes, while Dawn was mentally replacing him — but I don’t recall, exactly, when he got zapped in the Brainwave Scanner.
  • Somehow… Stalker and Mainframe are able to determine that Dr. Venom’s command of “kill any G.I. Joe” is dated, so anybody who joined the team after issue 10 (or 1982) isn’t a target. I suppose they’re also tuned-in (somehow) to the feed of Snake-Eyes’s mental attic, the way Dr. Mindbender and Alpha-001 were…? Maybe?
  • Snake-Eyes kills the attacking bear (apparently), but it appears Scarlett is severely injured.
  • I suppose the bear at Sanke-Eyes’s cabin is a minor callback to issue 31.
  • In one close-up scene, we can see Snake-Eyes’s actual EYE through his window shade visor. I don’t believe that’s ever occurred before. Nice touch.
  • A personnel profile./file card is included of Alpha-001
