G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #56

“Jungle Moves”

Writer: Larry Hama
Penciler: Rod Whigham

Summary

Cobra evacuates their Terror Drome in Sierra Gordo, leaving it set to explode. The Joes return, team up with the counter-revolutionaries again and enter the Drome. Trip-wire de-fuses the explosives and the Joes move some of the pre-fab Drome pieces out of the jungle. They fool Cobra into thinking they’re moving the pieces out on a choo-choo, when in fact they’re moving them out on inflatable rafts.

At Georgia Tech, Grunt meets a saucy former GI, his future wife, Lola.

Meanwhile, Snake-Eyes was knocked out by stun grenades last issue, and is taken to the new Cobra Consulate Building in NYC (gee, that sure went up fast). At Kennedy Airport, Destro, still in disguise, hops a plane en route to England, particular his family home of Glasgow.

Notes:

  • This issue had a TV commercial, but it really isn’t a toyjam, since no new vehicles or figures are introduced.
  • No mention of Cobra Commander at all. Serpentor is apparently the new leader of Cobra because Hasbro said so.
  • Once again, it’s a stupid plot with a choo-choo. (See also: Yearboook #2 and issue #51). What is the strange appeal of working a choo-choo into the story?!
  • Dr. Mindbender mentions that the Terror Dromes have a REAL purpose, they’re not just selling them cheap to be nice guys.
  • Destro’s face isn’t shown, but this month it’s implied that he’s bald. Last month, he seemed to have hair. No-Prize explanation: he shaved his head since last month. Destro still keeps his big gold amulet hanging around his neck, though. We’re led to believe that it’s a family heirloom.
  • Scarlett’s big on rescuing Snake-Eyes from the Cobra Consulate… which she’ll do in Yearbook #3. Issue 57 follows Destro back to Scotland.
  • Lifeline makes his first appearance in a non-speaking cameo. He’ll get a proper introduction in Special Missions #4
