G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Spirit #1

Writer/Pencils: Leonardo Romero

Summary

Somewhere in the wilderness, something is hunting animals. Spirit Iron-Knife and Freedom use their tracking skills and discover an abandoned Revanche research facility. Apparently, funding was cut, there was a firefight, and a large cyborg has been left alone. The cyborg has been hunting a variety of animals and experimenting on them. Spirit and Freedom engage the cyborg in conflict and eventually defeat it. They also recover hard intel and even manage to feed some wolf cubs (awwww).

Spirit and the Wolf cub
Awwww…

Notes:

  • Probably my favorite of the “Silent Missions”.
  • Nice to see Spirit actually being a TRACKER, for once. While the story sorta’ evolves into a basic comic book “hero vs. robot” fight (and then reminded me of Peacemaker and Eagley), the set-up is a great spotlight for Spirit’s specialty skillset.
  • I feel like Spirit’s always been a second-level favorite of Hama’s .An underrated tushy-kicker, if you will.
  • Spirit uses his sniper rifle to crack the cyborg’s faceplate and eventually get a kill-shot to his exposed head.
  • My only minor complaint is that a broken whiteboard and some hard copy files are necessary to fill-in-the-blanks with more details.
  • This reminds me of the “G.I. Joe European Missions” story “Cold Zone“, where Snake-Eyes is out in the wilderness and fighting a dude in a suit of armor.
