G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #295

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencils: S.L. Gallant

Summary:

At the Cobra Casino, the Joes continue sneaking around and fighting the new B.A.T.s. All while Cobra Commander tries to keep things quiet, for the public casino guests. Outside, the support team of Roadblock, Gung Ho and Rock and Roll also face easy resistance from the new B.A.T.s.

The new Serpentor clone begins to wake up, and Dr. Mindbender dubs him “Genghis Cobra”. The Joes assault Mindbender’s lab, hoping to use the Brainwave Scanner to off-load Dawn’s Snake-Eyes memories. They capture Mindbender and a Techno-Viper, but want to return to extract the entire Brainwave contraption. As they leave, they’re confronted by Laura 343 and her security team of various Vipers.

Notes:

  • Reads like “more of the same”, from last issue. Only part that made me smirk was Roadblock casually ripping off a B.A.T.s head.
  • One nifty plot thread that MAY come out of the captured Techno-Viper: it could turn out to be anybody, under that helmet. For example: Zartan. Yet I’m now sure how/why he’d fit into this storyline.
  • Cobra Commander has another funny scene, as a casino patron complains about Whitesnake on the facility’s muzak. The thought of a muzak version of “Still of the Night” cracks me up. Cobra Commander suggests: “maybe slip in some Cab Calloway? Like ‘Viper’s Drag’?”
  • Okay, for a deep cut: howabout King Kobra and their 1986 tune “Never Say Die” from the movie “Iron Eagle”?
  • And yes, I really don’t have much to say about this issue, so I was just using this space to reference Whitesnake, Cab Calloway, King Kobra and “Iron Eagle”. True story: my best buddy and I saw “Iron Eagle” the week it came out. When “Top Gun” hit, a few months later, we both thought it ripped off “Iron Eagle”.
  • Oh, I once again ended up with “Cover B”, because it was the only on available. It’s more indicative of the story, so I prefer it.

When the patron said he’d prefer some Three Dog Night, my first thought was The Ballad of G.I. Joe, where the first thing Cobra Commander will do when he takes over the world is bring Three Dog Night out of retirement under penalty of death.

Ha! Good catch. I’d say the connection to “Ballad of G.I. Joe” and Three Dog Night was probably deliberate, then.

Anyways, thank you. I had forgotten all that. Now I’m remembering Olivia Wilde as the Baroness. So, double thanks.
