G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Beach Head #1
Writer/Pencils: Phil Hester
Summary
In a war torn country, Beach Head has been taken captive in a Cobra helicopter. The helicopter crashes and a wounded Beach Head is saved by a stroke of fate and a sister/brother duo. They use their scant resources to nurse Beach Head back to health.
The son finds a discarded Cobra satchel. In turn, the sister takes the satchel to an aid truck and is given a satellite phone for it. Cobra Alley Vipers are dispatched to find Beach Head and the duo. Even wounded, Beach Head is able to use subterfuge and his skills to take them out. He as able to call for an evac, as the GI Joe Tomahawk arrives to extract Beach Head, as well as the sister and brother.
Notes:
- There’s no way to truly determine if they are sister and brother…but I’m using that for identification purposes. They could very well be a mother and son…or just two random refugees.
- I’m assuming the war-torn country is Borovia and see no harm in that concept. Wherever it is, Cobra seems to have a good grip on the place. It could also be one of the many “Stans” that have been include din the past 12 years, or a completely new location.
- The Cobra helicopter looks more like the Okotober Guard’s Hind helicopter and not their usual “Aspid” craft.
- It’s not shown how or why the Cobra helicopter crashes…but you can assume that Beach Head somehow had a hand in that happening. Even while zip-tied and being held captive.
- It really could’ve been any member of the G.I. Joe team in the main role. I’m guessing they chose Beach Head because he’s someone favorite figure? Regardless, it’s kind of nice to have someone Not-Named-Snake-Eyes on a solo mission and act all lethal towards Cobra. That helped with my rating.
- Hopefully the actual title of this comic helps remind me to label him as “Beach Head”– two words with a space. I have a long habit of typing him as “Beachhead” “Beachead” or “Beach-Head”.
- Not that it matters to anyone Not-Named-Me, but I think the last Phil Hester comic I bought was an issue of “Green Arrow”, circa 2002.
Appearances:
Characters (figures): Beach Head, Scarlett, Stalker, Lifeline
Characters (comic-only): “Sister and Brother”
Vehicles and Stuff (toys): Tomahawk
Vehicles and Stuff (comic only): Cobra Hind helicopter
Firsties: Sister and Brother, Cobra Hind (maybe?)

A part of me kinda wishes this took place in the IDW continuity. Beach Head was captured by Cobra at one point and never rescued. He reappeared a couple of years later with no explanation.
